Hi! My name is Madeline and I am a watercolor artist and content creator based in Los Angeles. I first started painting with watercolors in 2020 as a way to cope with my anxiety. That small practice has evolved into one of the most beautiful parts of my life. I am a landscape artist whose style is dreamy and whimsical. Do I need the exact same supplies as you?
No you definitely do not need the exact same supplies. The only supply I really recommend having is 100% cotton watercolor paper. As far as brushes and paints, you can use what you have and feel free to adapt however you see fit. 
How does knowing the pigment number help me to understand handmade paints? 
I also provide the pigment numbers because I want to show you how paint makers really do a lot of mixing for us and in doing so they provide us with such a beautiful array of colors! Many blends by handmade paint makers are not available in larger brand names. Even with the same pigments, different ratios of pigments create different colors! There is so much to be explored in the handmade paint realm!

What if I can’t purchase the same paints you have?
The biggest downside (and maybe the only downside to me) with handmade paints is that a maker’s inventory is not always well stocked. That is because they are usually working out of their homes and have limited amounts of pigments available. Once they sell out of a certain color it may be a while before they restock it. If you are unable to get your hands on the same paints as me, you can always find similar colors within the same brand or branch out and find other colors that call to you. I don’t believe your artwork needs to look exactly like mine and I actually encourage you to find colors and paints that make you happy. At the end of the day, I want you to paint something that feels like you.
What are pigment numbers? And how do they help me to understand watercolor paints?
Pigment numbers are a part of a larger classification of pigments that brands and paint makers use when creating watercolor paints. Each pigment number usually starts off with the letter P for Pigment or N for Natural and then the letter of the color R for Red, B for Blue etc. Pigment numbers are a more consistent way of referring to a color rather than a color name. For example a watercolor called, “Indigo” can be made of different pigments between different brands making it difficult to find similar colors. I provide the pigment numbers so that you can compare colors more easily if you do not have the same colors as me. Comparing pigment numbers is sometimes more accurate than comparing color names.
 You don’t go over specific techniques in this class. Do I need to know any before taking this class?
I don’t go through basic techniques because I don’t think there is one way to paint a landscape. What I love about “loose landscapes” is that the finished painting doesn’t have to look like a photograph. It’s meant to look like it was painted by you. That means, you don’t have to follow my brush strokes exactly as I do them. Give yourself freedom to paint it the way you would want to. If you don’t feel confident doing that yet, then follow along as much as you can. But one thing I LOVE about painting with watercolors are moments known as “happy accidents.” That’s when your paints or your brush does something unexpected. And it sometimes ends up being one of my favorite parts of a painting. It’s not planned, it’s accidental and in some ways those accidents are perfect. So loosen up and give yourself some creative license. If there’s a part of my landscape you don’t like–feel free to omit it! Use my class as a guide map but follow what feels right to you.
