This might sound familiar...

Students of mine used to think like this...

  • ...they wavered on getting started because they didn't know what supplies to use
  • ...they worried about painting loose because they always had to work off a perfectly planned out sketch to get a floral painting they liked
  • ...they wanted their paintings to look more vibrant, but worried it was their "artistic talent" holding them back, rather than simple color mixing techniques
  • ...they didn't want to spend hours painting intricate details, but also had no clue how to achieve the results they were looking for using quicker, loose techniques

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior experience with watercolours?
Not at all! This class is great for all levels. If you’re new to watercolours, just take your time with the basics and enjoy practicing. If you’re more experienced, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to refine your techniques and try out new approaches.
How do I control the amount of water on my brush?
Getting the water just right is key to loose florals. The amount of water on your brush really affects how fluid your strokes are. Try practicing on some scrap paper to see how different amounts of water change the look. If you want more control, use less water. For a more flowing look, add a bit more. It’s all about finding what works for you!
I’m finding it hard to create loose, natural-looking leaves—any advice?
Leaves can be tricky! Try using quick, sweeping motions with your brush, and don’t worry too much about perfect shapes. Leaves come in all shapes and sizes, so let your brush move freely and see what happens. Practicing with different brush types can also help you find a style that feels natural to you.
What do I do if my painting feels too tight or overworked?
If your painting’s feeling a bit stiff, take a step back and try loosening up your strokes. Practicing on some scrap paper with quick, flowing movements can help. Sometimes switching to a larger brush or using more water can really help you relax your technique. Remember, loose florals are all about being spontaneous—let the paint flow and embrace whatever happens!
How can I fix a mistake in my painting without starting over?
Mistakes are part of the process, and they can actually lead to something great! If you make one, try lifting the paint with a clean, damp brush or gently blotting it with a paper towel. If that doesn’t do the trick, think about how you can incorporate the mistake into your design—maybe turn it into an extra petal or leaf. Loose florals are meant to be a bit imperfect, so don’t stress too much about it!
I’m finding that my paper buckles when I use a lot of water. What can I do to prevent this?
Buckling can be a bit frustrating, especially when you’re using lots of water. To prevent this, I recommend using cold-pressed watercolour paper that’s at least 300gsm (140lb). This type of paper has a nice texture for those fluid washes, and the heavier weight helps it stay flat even with multiple layers. Feel free to try out different brands to see which one suits you best!
Why do my colours sometimes look muddy or dull?
Muddy colours can happen if certain colours don’t mix well together or if the paint is overworked. To avoid this, stick with complementary colours when layering, and let your base layer dry a bit before adding more paint. If your colours are looking dull, try brightening things up with fresh, vibrant hues, or use concentrated watercolours for that extra pop. And don’t forget—clean water makes a big difference!
How do I create depth in my floral paintings?
Creating depth is all about layering and varying your brushstrokes. Start with lighter, more diluted washes as your base, and then build up with darker, richer colours where you want more depth. Think about where the light would naturally hit your flowers and keep those areas lighter. This will help add that sense of dimension to your painting.
How do I know when my painting is finished?
It can be tricky to know when to stop! A good tip is to step away from your painting for a few minutes and then look at it with fresh eyes. If everything feels balanced and the main elements stand out, you might be done! Be careful not to overwork your painting—sometimes stopping sooner helps keep that loose, spontaneous feel.
What should I do if my paintings don’t turn out as expected?
It’s totally normal for things not to go as planned. Just remember that every painting is part of the learning journey. Don’t get discouraged—keep experimenting, and enjoy discovering new things along the way. Each painting teaches you something, so keep going and have fun with it!
